A new Melbourne-led study has revealed premature babies are at higher risk of chronic and irreversible lung damage later in life. According to lead researcher Professor Lex Doyle, premature babies are more at risk because ‘the preterm lung is not meant to be exposed to air … so they develop lung injury and the lung stops growing, and it doesn’t develop at the same rate’. The data was compiled over a number of years, with a total pool of 935 participants, applying to babies born before 32 weeks gestation or less than 1.5 kilograms at birth.
