Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital site joined the VICS collaboration during the 2022-23 participant cohort recruitment. The $200 million Hospital, on the Sunshine Hospital site, opened in May 2019 to meet the demand for world-class maternity and paediatric services in Melbourne’s west.

Neonatologist

Niranjan is a consultant Neonatologist and Clinical Lead for research at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s at Sunshine Hospital. He completed his undergraduate medical and postgraduate Paediatric and Neonatology training in India, following which he spent 3 years in Sydney and Toronto continuing his Neonatology training. He completed the University of Toronto Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine in 2007 and subsequently worked as a Neonatologist at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India for 12 years, 4 years of which he was the director of the unit before moving to Sunshine Hospital in November 2019. His research interest is in birth asphyxia and he has developed and patented a low-cost cooling device that is being used in more than 200 hospitals in various low- and middle-income countries.

Elizabeth Noble

Research Nurse Coordinator

Elizabeth is the Neonatal Research Nurse Coordinator at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Her role as a VICS Research Nurse includes consenting families and data collection. Elizabeth has worked both as a midwife and nurse at many hospitals across Australia. She really enjoys seeing the babies and their families return to the Growth and Development clinics for follow up and is excited to be participating as a research nurse in the VICS study.
